The Rocket Festival or Boung Bang Fai is a ceremony held the sixth month of the lunar calendar in Laos. The festival is a call for rain and a celebration of fertility. Self-made rockets are fired to the gods in a quest for rain, to allow the rice planting to begin. A parade accompanies the decorated rockets to the communal launch-pad. The team whose rocket travel the highest wins the competition. Phallic symbols to recall fertility are plenty and large quantities of alcohol are consumed during the days of celebration.
